Quick facts

  • Two laps of the half marathon course, starting and finishing at the Werner Park ballpark.
  • Roughly 1,898 feet of climbing on the organizers' own elevation map, so not the flat prairie course the setting suggests.
  • Course limit is 5 hours 30 minutes, tighter than most late-summer marathons.
  • Entirely paved road and paved trail, with long unshaded stretches around Prairie Queen Lake.
  • USATF-certified Boston qualifier, and one of three events in the Run Omaha series.

About the Nebraska Marathon

All Community Events put this race at Werner Park, the Omaha Storm Chasers ballpark in Papillion, and set it up as a single morning with the marathon, half, 10K and 5K all leaving the line together. Nebraska has more fall marathons than most runners expect, so geography is the useful distinction: this is the Omaha-metro one, separate from the state fair race in Grand Island and from the Omaha Marathon. It anchors a three-event Run Omaha series and raises money for the Team Jack Foundation's childhood brain cancer research.

Course

Werner Park is both start and finish. The marathon covers the half marathon course twice, and that loop crosses Lincoln Road onto the north trail, leaves the trail for Cornhusker Road, returns to the Prairie Queen Lake trail, then crosses Lincoln Road again to the south trail before heading back to the ballpark. Every mile is paved road or paved path. The profile is the part the location hides: the organizers put the full at 1,898 feet of climbing and an identical amount of descent, so the loop rolls constantly, and the second lap serves all of it again. The whole route sits between roughly 1,050 and 1,175 feet, so nothing on it is steep. The cost is cumulative.

Race-day weather

Shade and shelter are both scarce out around the lake, which is what makes the calendar slot matter. An early September start here is usually in the 60s and pleasant, and by late morning the air is often in the low 80s with corn-belt humidity behind it. Open ground also makes wind a normal condition rather than bad luck. The tight time limit compounds all of it, because anyone near the cutoff is finishing in the worst hour of the day.
