Mill Towns Race Series Marathon
A small capped field, a flat riverside loop repeated between Dundas and Northfield, and the RRCA Minnesota state marathon championship on the line.
Quick facts
- Four circuits of one flat six-and-a-half-mile trail loop along the Cannon River, all based out of Memorial Park.
- Boston-qualifying USATF course MN24023MAB, with zero drop start to finish and only 107 feet of total climbing.
- Serves as the RRCA Minnesota state championship marathon, with every marathon starter scored automatically.
- Capped in the low hundreds across all three distances, so entry can close well before race week.
- Six-and-a-half-hour cutoff, judged at the final aid station about two miles from the line.
About the Mill Towns Race Series Marathon
Your Pace or Mine Running Club builds this one around removing friction. Parking, bib pickup, the start, the finish and the food are all in the same park, packet pickup opens at 6:15 on race morning, and there is no expo to schedule a Saturday around. Entries are capped in the low hundreds across the marathon, half and 10K together, which keeps the trail from crowding and can also mean the full fills before race week arrives. The RRCA has tapped the marathon as its Minnesota state championship, and everyone who signs up for the full is scored in it without a separate entry. Race proceeds go to Project Purple, which funds pancreatic cancer research and patient financial aid.
Course
Memorial Park in Dundas is the start, the finish and a waypoint on every circuit. One loop covers roughly six and a half miles, tracking the Cannon River north into Northfield, crossing over, and returning down the far bank, almost all of it on paved trail under trees. Marathoners take it four times, half marathoners twice, the 10K once on a slightly shorter version. Total gain is listed at 107 feet, so this is flat in the literal sense rather than the Midwestern sense, and USATF course MN24023MAB records zero drop and zero separation between start and finish. Two things to know about the surface: a short section at the top of each loop runs on open road, and the route crosses Hester Street twice per lap under volunteer traffic control. Water and Gatorade sit at miles two and four of every loop plus the park itself, and the club will let a friend jump in unofficially to pace you for a lap, which is unusual and genuinely helpful on a quiet course.
Race-day weather
Southern Minnesota in the middle of October could hand you almost anything. The normal version starts within a few degrees of freezing and reaches the upper 50s by early afternoon, which is quick weather if you dress for the finish instead of the gun. Coming back through the park every six and a half miles makes it cheap to shed a layer as the morning warms, so overdressing costs less here than it would on a one-way course. Wind is what turns up in the split times, because the river corridor is open on the return leg and there is nothing between you and a north breeze.
