About the Amica Newport Marathon

Gray Matter Marketing has owned this Rhode Island race since 2015 and has grown the weekend past 5,000 runners without letting the marathon itself get big. The half carries most of that number; the full stays near a thousand finishers, which is why the back roads stay quiet and the beach finish never feels like a scrum. Anyone can enter; the field has never needed a ballot. Entry is open, priced in seasonal tiers that climb as the year goes on, and a slice of every fee goes to local charities.

Course

Both distances start and finish at Easton's Beach and go off in pace-ordered waves. The first half is the picture-postcard half: the Atlantic shoreline, then up past the Gilded Age mansions on Bellevue Avenue, and comparatively gentle. Then the marathon turns inland into Middletown, past Sachuest Beach, Hanging Rock and the Norman Bird Sanctuary, and the rollers stop being occasional. Total gain is 847 feet and nothing on the route sits higher than 105 feet above sea level, so no individual hill is the problem. The accumulation is, and it lands entirely in the half of the race where it hurts. An out and back on Indian Avenue near mile 20 and a final climb at mile 25 come before the drop back down to the sand.

Race-day weather

Mid-October on Aquidneck Island is close to ideal on paper, starting in the high 40s or low 50s and finishing in the low 60s. Wind off the water is the variable that actually matters. The shoreline sections have no shelter at all, and a stiff onshore breeze costs more than the temperature ever will. Rain, when it comes here, usually arrives with wind attached.
