About the Mathews Marathon

This community-run marathon explores Mathews County near the Chesapeake Bay. A capped field and separate relay keep the event intimate, while the certified solo full gives goal-time runners a legitimate qualifier.

Course

Very little elevation interrupts the rural route, but changing between paved, gravel and dirt roads adds texture. Runners should pace for footing and exposed backroads rather than assume flat means effortless.

Race-day weather

Coastal Virginia in October can be crisp or surprisingly warm and humid. Wind, rain and damp unpaved sections are realistic variables on roads close to the bay.
