About the Le Grizz 50 Mile Ultramarathon
Le Grizz has been run since 1982, which puts it among the oldest 50 mile ultramarathons in the country. The Glacier Institute, Glacier National Park's nonprofit education partner, organizes the race as a fundraiser, and the finish comes with huckleberry bear claws and Montana beer. A relay, a 15K, and a 5K share the day for crews and families.
Course
The course is an out-and-back on gravel North Fork Road, starting and ending at the Big Creek Outdoor Education Center and following the North Fork of the Flathead River with Glacier's peaks in view. Total gain is only about 2,300 feet, making this one of the more runnable 50 mile courses anywhere, with a mid-race aid stop at the Polebridge Mercantile.
Race-day weather
October mornings in the North Fork valley often start well below freezing, and snow is possible. Clear days warm into the 40s or 50s by afternoon, so runners usually shed layers through the first hours and add them back late in the race.
