About the Judgment Day Half Marathon
This is the last of three halves that running retailer Sole 2 Soul stages across California's Central Valley, and it carries the biggest field of the set with a few hundred half finishers a year. Starting on the infield at Sam Lynn Ballpark gives it a different opening than the usual road-corral setup, and the organizer runs it tight enough that entry is expected to close out.
Course
Runners head out of the Sam Lynn Ballpark infield and spend most of the race on the paved Kern River Parkway trail, with aid stations at roughly two mile spacing and portable restrooms at four points. The profile is flat and the surface is smooth, but the trail is narrow enough in the early miles that settling into the right group early pays off.
Race-day weather
Early October in Bakersfield means a cool, dry start close to sunrise and quick warming afterward. Shade on the river trail is patchy, so the last few miles often feel considerably warmer than the first few even on a good morning.
