Hinson Lake 24 Hour Ultra Classic

Hinson Lake is a long-running, deliberately accessible 24-hour race rather than an expensive destination production. The 20th edition charges a modest entry fee, fills early, and uses a first-come waiting list once the field is full. Every participant has the same full day to accumulate distance, whether the goal is a first ultra, 100 km, 100 miles, or the overall lap total.

The certified 1.5032-mile inner loop circles Hinson Lake on maintained sand and gravel trail. Sixteen small wooden bridges and one 300-foot crossing over the lake break up the rhythm, while trees provide more shade than a track race. Electronic bib timing records each lap and split. Runners may leave the loop to rest, but the clock continues from 8 a.m. Saturday until 8 a.m. Sunday, rewarding efficient stops and a sustainable run-walk plan.

Late September in south-central North Carolina can stay warm and humid well into the evening. The woods reduce direct sun but also hold moisture, and an afternoon shower can change the maintained trail and wooden bridges before the cooler overnight hours arrive. Plan hydration for heat first, then keep a dry layer and spare shoes ready for the night.
