Highball to Thurmond 50 Mile

Highball to Thurmond takes its name from an old railroad signal meaning the track ahead is clear, and the race leans into that identity. Runners cross New River Gorge National Park from Montgomery to Thurmond, a historic rail town with almost no remaining residents, then ride the Amtrak back to the start. A 50K, a ruck division, and a 50 mile relay share the day.

The 50 mile route is point-to-point with about 6,000 feet of climbing, mixing roughly 12 miles of paved road with mountain dirt roads and rugged singletrack. Overlooks above the gorge break up the long climbs before the course drops into Thurmond. The 14-hour cutoff is shaped by the train schedule, so back-of-pack runners are literally racing the evening departure.

Mid-May in the New River Gorge is usually mild at the early start, with humidity building through the afternoon. Rain can leave the trail sections greasy, and shaded hollows stay noticeably cooler than exposed ridge roads.
