Course
The start is in St. Niklaus at about 1,116 m, in Switzerland's deepest valley. From there the route climbs the Mattertal through traditional villages and along mountain streams, with medical posts at Zermatt, Sunnegga, Riffelalp and Riffelberg, before finishing at Riffelberg at 2,585 m. Total ascent is 2,075 m. Elite runners and the first block go at 8:30 a.m., followed by block starts, and the marathon shares its start with the ultra. Hot showers are available at the finish.
Race-day weather
Early July is usually pleasant in the valley, but the finish sits nearly 1,500 m higher, where air is cooler and wind is more likely. Sun at altitude is strong and mountain weather can turn quickly, so carry a layer for the upper climb.
About the Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon
The marathon is the centerpiece of a weekend that also includes an ultra, a half marathon from Zermatt, the TOP20RUN and the Hörnli Kids Run. Organizers rank it among the most demanding marathon routes in Europe, and it draws runners from around the world. Entry includes a finisher shirt, a medal and free Swiss public transport to and from the race.
