Quick facts

  • Entire course sits between roughly 6,400 and 6,900 feet, so altitude matters more than the profile.
  • Fully paved route with a finish on the Animas River Trail.
  • Small field with a quiet mountain-town feel rather than big-race crowds.
  • Cold starts and strong high-desert sun are both realistic in October.

About the Durango Marathon

A small mountain-town race from Durango organizer Black Bear Events and Timing, this October marathon gives southwest Colorado a paved full at altitude. It suits runners who want quiet roads and mountain scenery more than a crowded big-city start.

Course

The route leaves Santa Rita Park, climbs through the eastern side of Durango past Fort Lewis College, then heads north along County Road 250 before finishing on the Animas River Trail. Everything is paved, but the course lives between roughly 6,400 and 6,900 feet, so sea-level pacing plans need adjusting.

Race-day weather

October mornings in Durango often start near freezing, then warm quickly once the sun clears the ridgelines. The air is dry and the sun is strong at altitude, so layers at the start and steady fluids later in the race both matter.
