Desert Solstice 24 Hour

Desert Solstice is a small, performance-first track meet for elite ultrarunners pursuing records and United States 24-hour team standards. Entry is limited to 25 athletes across the 24-hour and 100-mile competitions, and applicants must meet a published qualifying standard. The event has produced more than 100 national records and 15 world records, helped by precise timing, a flat track, and a field built for sustained pacing rather than trail survival.

Every meter is run on Camelback High School's certified 400-meter all-weather track. The direction changes every four hours to reduce repetitive stress, and chip timing records both the full laps and a 200-meter split on the backstretch for record attempts. Each runner shares a canopy and tables with one other athlete beside the track. There is no elevation gain to manage, leaving pacing, fueling, heat control, and the physical cost of thousands of identical turns as the central problems.

Phoenix in December usually offers dry air, clear daylight, and a large temperature swing. Morning conditions can feel cool, direct sun may make the track warmer by afternoon, and the desert night can become cold enough for gloves and layers. With no shade on the oval and no pause in the clock, athletes need a deliberate plan for sun exposure and fast clothing changes after dark.
