About the Dead Cow Gully Backyard Ultra
Dead Cow Gully is staged on Iona, a 1,600-acre cattle property held by the same family for six generations. Its isolation, large field, and deep performances have made it one of the defining backyard races outside Tennessee. The property sits north of Nanango, and the race's name comes from the creek gully running through the farm. The event reached a new level when the course hosted a 119-yard world record performance.
Course
The 6.706 km yard runs through a working rural property where timbered ridges descend toward partially cleared creek flats. All runners leave together each hour and must return before the next start. Fifteen completed yards pass 100 km and 24 pass 160 km, but neither milestone ends the race. The terrain may look modest one lap at a time; the real difficulty is repeating the same rises, footing, and turns without a skipped hour.
Race-day weather
Late May is early winter in inland southeast Queensland. Days can be mild and dry, but clear nights on the property may turn cold quickly, especially in low creek country. Fog, dew, and a large day-to-night temperature swing can change the feel of the same loop, so crews should prepare both sun protection and genuinely warm overnight layers.
