Quick facts
- Two laps of one loop from Country Park, the bulk of it on the paved Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway.
- USATF course NC24038DF makes it a Boston qualifier, and the certificate shows no net drop with start and finish in the same park.
- Six-hour limit at a 13:44 per mile pace, with free pace groups from 3:30 through 6:00 and a sweeper at the back.
- The greenway is not closed to the public, so runners share a narrow paved trail with walkers and cyclists.
- Marathon packets must be collected in person with current photo identification, unlike the shorter distances.

About the Cannonball Marathon
The half marathon and 5K here have been running since the late 2000s; the marathon came later and is now the piece that gives the weekend its name. It is also the smallest field on the schedule, because the shorter distances take the bulk of the entries. Country Park on the north side of Greensboro anchors everything, which is a sensible choice because it is where the city's runners already train. The Friday evening 5K under lights opens the weekend, the Saturday morning races follow, and a Double Barrel option pairs the two days for a third medal. One consequence of qualifier status shows up before you run: marathon entrants have to collect their own packet with current photo identification, while everyone else can send a friend.
Course
A single loop runs just over 13 miles and the marathon covers it twice, starting and finishing at Jaycee Park inside Country Park. Each lap exits the park onto Lawndale and Joan Avenue, joins the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway near Pisgah Church Road, and follows that paved rail trail north past Lake Brandt to a cone turnaround out by Owls Roost Road before retracing it and cutting back through the neighborhood to the park. USATF course NC24038DF records zero drop and no separation between start and finish, and the greenway itself sits on an old rail grade, but the road miles in and out of Country Park roll enough that the organizers warn against reading the half marathon's fast times as an easy day. The greenway also stays open to the public while the race runs, so the etiquette is training-run etiquette: hold the right, expect walkers and cyclists coming the other way. Six aid stations serve the loop, so a marathoner passes most of them four separate times.
Race-day weather
Mid-October in the Piedmont gives about as good a race morning as North Carolina gets, starting near 50 and topping out around 70. Tree cover on the greenway traps the cool air early, which is why the first lap usually feels better than the second even when the day never turns hot. Anyone running down to the six-hour limit crosses the line at a quarter to two in the afternoon, and the park sections at either end of the loop are where the sun reaches you. Autumn rain is frequent enough that wet pavement and a slick pedestrian bridge are worth a thought when picking shoes.
