Quick facts

  • Roughly 450 feet of gradual climb through mile 20, then a steady descent over the last six miles.
  • The whole route runs between roughly 3,600 and 4,050 feet, so thin air is part of the effort.
  • Road, sidewalk and paved forest path, on streets that stay partly open to traffic.
  • No hard cutoff, though traffic control and course support wind down around the seven-hour mark.
  • Boston qualifier on USATF course OR24003JH, and a separate race from Haulin' Aspen, the trail marathon in the same town.

About the Bend Marathon

Two marathons run out of Bend and they have almost nothing in common. This is the road one, out of the Old Mill District on the Deschutes and on pavement the whole way, while Haulin' Aspen is an August trail race from Wanoga Sno-Park under a different organizer. The half marathon still draws the larger field, and the 10K and 5K go off behind it, so the full is the small race on a busy morning. One quirk is worth planning around: the organizers reshape the route most years as the city builds new paths and reroutes around new subdivisions, so maps land late and last year's mile-by-mile detail is not a safe basis for a pace plan.

Course

Start and finish sit together in the Old Mill District at roughly 3,600 feet, and the shape of the day is a long pull up followed by a long ride down. The first five or six miles stay low through riverside parks and the Galveston and Harmon streets on the near west side. From there the route works west and steadily uphill through Compass Park, past the Hydro Flask campus and Hosmer Lake Drive, up toward Skyline Ranch and Century Drive, and finally onto the paved forest path that parallels Cascade Lakes Highway. The turnaround out there falls near mile 20 at the high point, just over 4,000 feet and about 450 feet above the start. The grade is gentle enough that most runners will not name a single climb, which is exactly why it catches people; the bill shows up as a pace that stops responding. The last six miles are the payback, dropping through Bachelor View and the Haul Road trail back into the Old Mill. Surfaces are road, sidewalk and paved path, roads are not fully closed to traffic, and aid stations come every two to five miles with water refill stations for runners carrying their own bottles.

Race-day weather

The organizers put the typical start between 35 and 40 degrees and the afternoon high in the low to mid 60s, which is a wide enough swing that what you do with your throwaway layer matters. Central Oregon is high desert, so the air is dry and April sun at 3,600 feet does more damage than a low-60s high implies. Spring is also unsettled here, and the upper miles out toward the Cascades sit several hundred feet higher and far more exposed than the start line does.
