Brazen Racing built this race on the canyon trails that host Western States, and it rewards runners comfortable with sustained climbing. Fields stay small by road-half standards, which fits a route that spends more time on singletrack than on pavement.
Course
The route leaves Overlook Park, drops toward Robie Point, crosses No Hands Bridge over the North Fork American River, and climbs toward Cool before turning back. More than half the distance sits on the Western States Trail, and the finish comes after roughly 2,465 feet of gain.
Race-day weather
Late September in the American River canyon starts cool and heats quickly once the climb out begins. Shade is uneven and the return leg lands in the warmest part of the morning, so early restraint pays more here than on a road half.
