Quick facts
- Current title is the Altra Yorkshire Marathon.
- Historic route passes York Minster before rural villages.
- Fast measured road course with broad personal-best appeal.
- University of York hosts the start and finish.
Course
The measured road route passes York Minster before heading into surrounding villages and returning to the university. Long flat sections are quick, though rural rollers and a late incline require restraint.
Race-day weather
Mid-October usually brings cool racing temperatures, but rain and wind are common possibilities. Open country roads can feel exposed even when central York is calm.
About the Altra Yorkshire Marathon

Firsthand runner report
A runner's take on the Altra Yorkshire Marathon
Course is good, the hill in the last KM back into the city is horrible and probably the worst thing about this course when you're already knackered.
Runner reports
Runner reports from the Altra Yorkshire Marathon
Firsthand accounts from runners who completed the race. Details reflect that edition and may change from year to year.
Conditions were good, slight chance of rain which stop-started for a couple of minutes but cleared up.
Course is good, the hill in the last KM back into the city is horrible and probably the worst thing about this course when you're already knackered.
Two switchbacks are annoying, could probably benefit from dropping one of them if possible.
Cobbles in the first 1KM of the race are a real ankle risk, not a Marathon for PBs.
