Course
Start and finish are on Usk Way by the University of South Wales, next to the event village. The route passes Newport Castle, the Victorian market, the Transporter Bridge and the International Sports Village, then heads out across the Gwent Levels, a coastal landscape of wildlife and medieval villages. Organizers call it one of the flattest marathon courses in Europe, and the roads are fully closed. Energy gels, energy drinks and water are on offer along the way, and pacers run from 3:00 to 4:30 in 15-minute steps.
Race-day weather
Mid-April in South Wales is usually mild, but the open, low-lying Gwent Levels leave runners exposed to wind, and showers can blow through quickly. Pack a layer for the start area and plan for changeable conditions.
About the ABP Newport Marathon
Run 4 Wales, the team behind the Cardiff Half Marathon, organizes the festival with support from Associated British Ports and Newport City Council. The first race was held in 2018, with ABP backing the event from the start. Race day also includes a half marathon, 10K, mile and junior races, and a Women's Running Conference and pasta party fill the Saturday before. Organizers say nearly 70% of finishers have set a personal best here.
