About the St. Pete Beach Classic Half Marathon
Two decades of running have made this the anchor of a Gulf-coast race weekend based at the Sirata Beach Resort. The shorter distances run on Saturday and the half goes off on Sunday morning, so runners who want the long distance still get a full weekend of racing without doubling up.
Course
The route covers the whole island, starting in historic Pass-A-Grille and working north through the beach neighborhoods to North Beach. There is almost no elevation to speak of. What shapes the race is exposure: long straight stretches beside the Gulf with little shelter, so a headwind on the return can cost more than any hill would.
Race-day weather
Mid-January on the Florida Gulf coast is usually mild at a 6:45 AM start, often in the 50s or low 60s with high humidity. It warms quickly once the sun is up, and the sea breeze can swing from helpful to punishing depending on direction.
