Quick facts

  • Six hour limit, and the half marathon split closes mid-morning; marathoners who reach it late are rerouted onto the half course.
  • Rolling city parkways with no net drop, certified as USATF course MO24010MU and good for a Boston qualifying time.
  • Entry climbs through five price tiers and closes the day before the race, with no race-morning signup.
  • Small marathon field running alongside a much larger half, 10K, 5K and five-person relay, so the back miles are quiet.
  • The organizer sells a virtual marathon separately; only the in-person race runs the certified city course.

About the St. Joseph, Missouri Marathon

Most of the weekend's runners are doing the half, the 10K or the 5K. The marathon is the small one, a field that spends long stretches strung out across town while the shorter races empty out behind it. The St. Joseph Sports Commission built the event with the Junior League a few years ago and has kept it civic in scale rather than chasing size, with entry money going back to both organizations' local programs. Five price tiers run from late January to the day before the race, nothing is sold on race morning, and the marathon has a minimum age of 16.

Course

Everything starts and ends behind Civic Center Park downtown, and the route works its way from the north side of town to the south side using the early-1900s parkway system, with several out and back sections stitched into it. Start and finish sit at the same elevation and the low and high points of the whole course are only about 200 feet apart, which is the honest summary: nothing here is a climb you would name, but the road is tilting most of the time. The efforts that register are the pull out of Krug Park early, the S curve past Mark Twain School, and one more rise around mile 22 before the road tips back down toward the park. Aid comes every two to three miles. The point where the half marathon peels away closes at 10:30 in the morning, and any marathoner still short of it gets sent onto the half course to finish.

Race-day weather

Late September in northwest Missouri normally hands out a start near 50 degrees and an afternoon around 75, so the 7 a.m. gun catches the good part of the day and the closing hour does not. Humidity off the Missouri River valley usually matters more than the number on the thermometer. Shade is patchy through the parkway sections and thin on the neighborhood streets, which is worth planning around if you expect to be out past five hours.
