Silver Comet Marathon

Run entirely on the paved Silver Comet Trail in Mableton, this late-October marathon is a grassroots event that trades crowds for controlled, traffic-free miles. It has run for well over a decade alongside an even older half marathon, and it draws runners chasing Boston qualifying times on one of the flattest surfaces in the Atlanta area.

The out-and-back course follows the Silver Comet Trail, a former rail line, so grades stay shallow the whole way. The paved path is smooth and shaded in stretches, and its mile-to-mile consistency suits even pacing. The trade-off is repetition: scenery changes slowly and spectators are sparse between the turnaround and the finish.

Late October near Atlanta usually brings a cool morning and a mild finish. Tree cover along the trail softens the sun, though a warm year can still make the closing miles feel like early afternoon.
