Quick facts
- About 70% hard-packed trail and 30% road, on a mainly flat route.
- Point-to-point from Millbrook Resort to Queenstown Recreation Ground.
- Runners must be 18 or older on race day.
- The first start group requires a qualifying time: under 3:15 for men, under 3:35 for women.
Course
A point-to-point route starts at Millbrook Resort and heads through Arrowtown onto the Arrow River trails. It circles Lake Hayes, crosses the Old Shotover Bridge, follows the Twin Rivers trail beside the Kawarau River and takes the Frankton Arm walkway into town. A lap of Queenstown Gardens and a short run along Marine Parade lead to the finish at Queenstown Recreation Ground. The profile is mainly flat with a few undulations, and the course closes at 4:30pm. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or prams.
Race-day weather
November is late spring in the Southern Lakes, so the morning can feel cold at the start before warming quickly in clear sun. Alpine weather turns fast, and wind or rain can move in with little warning on the open riverside and lakeside stretches. Pack for both, and do not count on a calm day.
About the NZ Sotheby's International Realty Queenstown Marathon
New Zealand's big destination marathon trades city streets for the Wakatipu Basin. About 70% of the distance runs on hard-packed trail, which is unusual for a race of this size, and the field across the weekend's distances runs into the thousands. Prize money goes three deep, but most runners come for the scenery and the trip, and Queenstown is a holiday town built for both.
