About the F3 Lake Half Marathon
Billed as Chicago's original winter half, this January race is where a lot of local runners check their fitness before spring training blocks begin. It is one of the few large Chicago races still run by an independent organizer, and the field turns out in weather that would cancel events elsewhere.
Course
Runners start and finish at Soldier Field and head out and back on the Lakefront Trail. The path is flat, so the day is decided by footing and wind rather than elevation, and the return leg can feel very different from the outbound one.
Race-day weather
Late January in Chicago means cold, and often well below freezing at the 10:00 start. Wind off Lake Michigan is the defining stressor, and snow or ice on the lakefront path can slow the pace no matter how fit the field is.
