A wet first half
The race started in heavy rain at 11°C, with less wind than forecast. The men went through 10K in 29:55, which the organizer's liveblog judged too slow for major records, and reached halfway in 63:02 with 15 runners still together. The rain stopped around then. Eleven men were still in the group at 30K, in 1:29:51.
Andualem Belay, the second-fastest man in the field at 2:04:44, dropped back after 10K and did not finish, per the liveblog. Biwott, the 2024 winner, stayed in contention into the final kilometers and took third. Richard Ringer was fifth in 2:07:07 and Samuel Fitwi seventh in 2:08:57, so three German men finished in the top seven.
The 2:03:42 course record, shared by Wilson Kipsang (2011) and Brimin Misoi (2023), was never under threat.
Dörfel's debut
Yimer and Siranesh Yirga went through halfway in 69:19, with Blanka Dörfel 70 seconds back in 70:29. Yimer ran alone from around 30K and slowed late, but still had 52 seconds on Dörfel at 40K and held on.
Dörfel's 2:20:46 was her first marathon. The organizer's race report and liveblog credit her with the fastest marathon debut by a German woman (Melat Kejeta's 2:23:57 was the previous mark), the second-fastest German woman ever behind Irina Mikitenko's 2:19:19, the eighth-fastest European woman ever, and the best time by a German woman in Frankfurt. Hawi Feysa's course record of 2:17:25 from 2024 stands.
A 50-year-old in 2:15
Mark Kiptoo, the 2014 winner, ran 2:15:24 at age 50. The organizer calls it a new M50 world best, more than four minutes under the 2:19:29 that had stood since 1991.
A record 19,720 runners entered the marathon, and more than 32,800 from 128 nations across all distances, per the organizer. The organizer hadn't announced a finisher total by Monday morning; the preliminary list ranks about 13,300 men and women.
The 2027 race is on October 31, and entry is already open.
